LEGO Storage - Billy Bookcase/Oxberg Combo Display

Sorting out the little box room upstairs has been an ongoing project since we moved into our house over a year ago. As well as stuff from the initial move, I have had 16 boxes of stuff shipped over from Japan and have built one full-size IKEA Billy bookcase and one half-sized Billy to go in there for storage.

I have some existing LEGO display boxes that fit on the shelves nicely, but was looking for somewhere to put my recently built Black Seas Barracuda and Rock Island Refuge sets. As you know, dust is the mortal enemy of LEGO and so I decided to fit some doors onto an additional full-size Billy that I later bought for increased storage. I had previously installed full glass Oxberg doors on the first set of Billy’s, but opted for a half wood half glass doors for this bookcase. You can see the results below:

Luckily the depth of the shelving is 28cm so both the ship and the island just about managed to fit in. In order to be able to close the doors some parts had to be moved around however. The Rock Island Refuge went in there first with the two main changes being the palm tree being located to a different part of the island and also the construction of the dock needed changing slightly. For the Barracuda, as it needed to fit on the left of the shelf, certain features like the plank had to be relocated to the other side of the ship as well as all the pirates having to face the opposite way. Obviously some parts of the ship such as the anchor couldn’t be moved to the other side without rebuilding the whole thing but I can live with that.

All in all it turned out quite well I think. The majority of dust should be kept out - it’s not fully sealed as there is a tiny gap between the doors - but it will do, and the sets are nicely displayed through the glass. There is an opaque white curtain on the room so there won’t be direct sunlight being shone on it either. I have a few other pirate minifigures knocking around so will probably add them in to the display at some point. I may even consider removing the island (or relocating it) as it does cramp the ship up a bit but I’ll see how I feel about it a bit later down the line and dependant onhow much space I have elsewhere.

The next step is to sort out all my other minifigures that have been waiting in shoeboxes for years. I plan to get a few more of those display cases and will add them in addition to those that are already on display. That’s my next ongoing project but progress is slow due to business being closed/delayed due to the currret situation with Covid. As you can see, these also utilise the Billy/Oxberg combo but on a half-width Billy:

So there you have it! IKEA furniture idea for LEGO display and storage using a Billy/Oxberg combo. I've assembled so much IKEA stuff in my house over the last year I feel I can pretty much build anything from there now.

PS: this article is not sponsored by IKEA. In fact, in the last delivery they left out an extra spare Billy shelf that I had ordered due to it being out of stock! It’s been over two weeks and I am still waiting for it to be made available and sent out to me. But with the current situation it’s all a bit up in the air isn’t it?

Anyway, I’m sure I will be able to update you with further minifigure/lego display at some point in the future. Until then, take care!
